Elder Avenue

This Crouch End virtual tour shows the junction of Elder Avenue with Tottenham Lane. Elder Avenue is split in two by Tottenham Lane, and runs from Weston Park through to Middle Lane. It was named after the Elder family who owned Topsfield Hall, one of the area's stately homes which was situated near here, though has long since been demolished to make way for the development of Crouch End. Crouch End retained its rural status for longer than seemed possible due to the reluctance of the Elders to allow building on the land surrounding their estate, and so it was only when the family died out that more buildings were allowed in Crouch End.

In former years, the end of Tottenham Lane leading away from the Clock Tower was very much the poor relation in terms of shops and restaurants. However, this is now changing, with some gems to be found as you head north along Tottenham Lane. Coffee Cake for example are a self-styled artisan bakery, producing wonderful cakes which you can take home to indulge or eat in with a coffee.
