Hornsey High Street, Priory Road End

Until fairly recently, Hornsey High Street offered a very pastoral scene to visitors. The New River went through the village (before being diverted underground in 1860) apparently crossing the High Street twice, with anglers sitting on the banks to catch their dinner, before going to relax at the Three Compasses pub and listen to the water lapping at the riverbank. In more recent years, the High Street looked a little sad and neglected, but this has started to change with the advent of the New River Village development at the Wood Green end of Hornsey and the overspill of people unable to afford property in Crouch End. The street is now a vibrant place with some great restaurants and some good local shops.

In this virtual tour, St Mary's Church of England Infants and Junior School is visible on Rectory Gardens. On the other side of the roundabout, Priory Road continues from Hornsey High Street up to Muswell Hill, and Middle Lane leads in to Crouch End.
