Hornsey High Street, Obelisk

The inscription on the granite obelisk in Hornsey High Street reads: ‘The fear of the Lord is the fountain of life. Presented to the parish of Hornsey by Maria Hawes Ware 1863’. The structure is Grade II listed and is on the English Heritage 'at risk' register as being in need of repair. Similarly the cast iron lamp column behind it (1870) is also listed as being in need of restoration. The cattle trough in front of it would have once watered the horses who waited for their masters to refresh themselves in the pub.

The large pub is the Great Northern Railway Tavern which dates from 1897, and served customers coming out of London on the Great Northern Railway. The Victorian gin-palace still boasts its stunning original wooden paneling, wrought iron and glass and it's worth visiting for this alone.
