Hornsey Town Hall Square

The development of the Town Hall in Crouch End and the square around it was intended to be strikingly modern, heralding a new age of convenience. In addition to the Town Hall, a gas showroom was built to showcase gas cooking, with an electricity showroom on the opposite corner next to the telephone exchange. The gas showrooms are now Barclays Bank, but the carved stone panels depicting the gas industry ares still visible on the building. The telephone exchange is now council offices, but still has the original 1930's signage on the building. The electricity showrooms were used by Powerhouse until 2005 (please click here to view the virtual tour showing the old electricity showrooms) and is now a large and flourishing Italian Deli with a charming street cafe (with space inside for when the North London weather gets too much!)
